Created in 2026, this painting has been framed in an elegant dark brown 2.25 in. moulding with a 0.5 in. silver/pewter liner. The framed dimensions are 35 x 21.5 in.
Susan Paterson’s signature, award-winning monochromatic style is celebrated in this painting, as her restrained colour palette emphasizes the interplay of light, shadow, texture, and form. By limiting the composition to subtle variations of tone, she creates a sense of visual harmony while drawing attention to the intricate details and material qualities of the objects.
Paterson expertly utilizes a chiaroscuro technique, placing brightly illuminated, highly reflective surfaces against a deep, dark background. This strong contrast emphasizes the texture, form, and volume of the objects, creating atmospheric lighting reminiscent of works from the Dutch Golden Age. Paterson’s skilled composition juxtaposes the smooth, delicate surfaces of the egg, teapot, and sugar bowl with the intricate details of the ornate silver embellishments and the sumptuous lace tablecloths. These contrasting textures demonstrate Paterson’s careful attention to detail while reinforcing the visual richness characteristic of traditional still-life painting.
ARTIST STATEMENT -
My work evokes the past, both in technique and in subject. I do highly detailed studies of landscape, florals and everyday objects, capturing the subtleties of the light, colour and textures that are so fascinating but so often overlooked. When I’m painting I love getting lost in the details and the challenge of creating an illusion that explains how I feel about what I see. I’m fascinated by light and how it describes form, changes colours, is reflected back and disappears into the dark depths of a background. I work in subdued colours, preferring the subtleties of the subject to stand out. I get great pleasure from slowing down, spending hours intently observing and trying to capture the incredible beauty that surrounds us.
