Mactaquac’s Opus Village was home to the first glassblowing co-op in Canada, the birthplace of Canadian studio glass, where legendary New Brunswick glass artists Martin Demaine, Pat Stanley, Don Pell and Jon Sawyer honed their craft amongst many others.
Martin Demaine was one of the founders of the Opus Craft Village, along with Studio Potters Bill Norman, Allan Crimmins and Bill Graff, and others. These Opus Craft handcraft artisans opened their studio-shops in June 1975 and produced wares until about 1983.
Demaine had moved his studio from the area of Miramichi Bay to Opus Village at Mactaquac, near the St. John River. According to Bob Kavanagh, former director of the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, "Opus Village was a craft-making community that was very active for a number of years. Demaine had two apprentices--Pat Stanley and Jon Sawyer, who took over the studio after Demain left."
In Opus Village, Patrick (Pat) was part of "Mactaquac Glassworks" with Jon Sawyer in 1979 according to Crafts New Brunswick. After that he moved to Prince Edward Island.
His work is sometimes seen in the secondary market. His work was featured in the Craft NB 60 Years Celebration, 2024.
