Why did Molly Lamb Bobak paint Israel landscapes?
Molly Lamb Bobak was one of 10 artists chosen from across Canada in 1984 to spend one week touring Israel and two subsequent weeks interpreting their impressions of Israel.
The artists were invited under the auspices of the Canada-Israel Cultural Foundation, which seeks to promote cultural understanding between Canada and Israel. In September 1986, some of the work from this initiative was exhibited at the National Arts Centre in conjunction with the Department of External Affairs.
Stephen Cruise, Joyce Wieland, Vincent Tangredi and John McEwen from Toronto; Bill Vazan and Irene Whittome, Montreal; Molly Lamb Bobak, Fredericton; Richard Prince, Vancouver; Ron Moppett, Calgary, and Sylvain Cousineau, Ottawa, were the artists selected by a panel of experts consisting of David Burnett, Curator of Contemporary Art, Art Gallery of Ontario; Luke Rombout, Director of the Art Gallery of Vancouver; Phillip Fry, Professor of Art at Ottawa University, Reesa Greenberg, Professor at Concordia University and Francois Gagnon, Professor at the University of Montreal.
