This rare, original handmade lithograph was created in 1957. It is signed and dated by the artist. The edition number of this piece is 6/32.
The support paper has yellowed over the years due to acidic framing. The framing has been updated to all acid-free material. It remains in its vintage frame moulding.
A lithograph is an original multiple. This technique was developed in the late 1700s. The process is rooted in the principle that oil and water don’t mix. The artist draws an image onto a flat limestone or metal plate using a greasy crayon or ink. After chemical treatment and moistening, ink sticks only to the drawn areas. Paper is then pressed onto the surface, transferring the image.
Each color in a lithograph requires a separate plate and print run, making multi-color lithographs labor-intensive and requiring the artist’s direct involvement.
