Artist Statement
This is the beginning of a new collection of colourful jewellery inspired by the overlap of ironwork and nature. This collection explores colour and the way it can interact with ironwork in nature. I was inspired by the way architecture such as old cemetery fences can be overgrown with flowers and greenery when left untouched long enough to flourish into an entirely new work of art.
ArtsNB enabled me to learn these techniques over the past year, thanks to a generous grant. It is with this funding that I was able to dedicate resources to practice and develop this collection.
The pieces are created using the ancient technique of cloisonné, in which thin strips of wire are shaped and placed on the surface of sheet metal. Finely ground pigmented glass – called vitreous enamel – is then melted onto the surface between the wires, fusing the parts together. The enamel is applied and fused in many thin layers to build up the colour.
