Karen graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design with a B.F.A. majoring in studio painting in 1991. Since then she has had numerous solo exhibitions and many group exhibitions.
Karen Shackleton's paintings are dramatic and expressive. Her use of colour and texture create works which interpret and give life to the landscape and surroundings she explores. Shackleton's paintings are fresh and exciting.
In 2002, Karen traveled to Ireland where she was involved in a three week residency at Cill Rialaig Artist Retreat in County Kerry. From that experience, she produced a strong series of landscape paintings depicting the atmosphere and emotion of the Irish countryside.
Her work can be found in many private collections as well as the University of New Brunswick permanent collection and The New Brunswick Museum’s collection of work from Sheila Hugh Mackay’s estate. She has received several grants and awards and has participated in many artists residency programs.
She resides in the village of Gagetown with her partner and fellow artist Peter Thomas.
