This piece was created in 2023.
Each of the works has a wood frame surround created by charring the curly and birdseye maple wood with a propane torch. This is a Japanese technique to preserve wood making it fire proof, water proof and resistant to insects called, Shou sugi ban. I feel that this framing process enhances the simple and natural feel of this series. The charring of the wood is followed by brushing the surface and wiping it clean. A coat of refined linseed oil is then applied and, after it has been absorbed into the wood, a very thin coat of shellac seals the final frame. Framed dimensions are 25 x 25 in.
The work is protected with a final coat of archival Gamvar Satin Varnish.
