Clay • Colour • Gesture • Fire explores new approaches to ceramic fine craft with abstract and colourful glazes, new porcelain forms, and firing techniques, by celebrated New Brunswick artist Karen Burk.
Burk acknowledges that there are many wonderful artists who explore global warming, political violence, and complex conceptual issues in their work. But this time, she wanted to focus on beauty. Which is just as crucial at this time.
Her inspiration came from abstract expressionist beauty-seeking artists from the 1960s including Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell. Burk says: "They loved their material, their lyrical gestures spoke of landscape, sky, and spirit through paint and colour. I try here to do the same with clay and fire."
