These varied editions are hybrid pieces combining painting and printmaking. In all of the works shown here, I used linocut blocks to print on hand-painted paper. In some of them, I added paint after the printing, as well. In several editions I used different colours of inks for the individual prints. So, although pieces were printed using the same linoblock, no two prints within any one edition are identical. (Hence, “varied” edition, given the designation “VE”.)
In the prints depicting the geology of northern Labrador, I used interference and iridescent pigments in acrylic underpainting. In the print Labrador Rockface — Anorthosite Wall, this is an allusion to the gemstone Labradorite, which is found in anorthosite, an igneous rock. Labradorite also symbolically references the northern lights, being the chthonic manifestation of the aurora borealis, according to Inuit myth. The iridescence in these prints also connects to my Nocturne series. -Christine Koch
