ARTIST STATEMENT -
Wildflowers are robust and resilient flowers. They grow and thrive in areas that are often disregarded and not noticed. Despite our lack of attention and observation of them they reproduce and spread naturally in the environment of their own choosing.
I chose to focus on these flowers in my paintings since so often their beauty is overlooked and not really appreciated. When we start to notice and pay attention to them, we realize that they are everywhere and the more time we spend closely looking at them, the more we can see their wild beauty.
In this series, I placed these flowers: lupin, yarrow, pearly everlastings and purple loosestrife against wide open skies to highlight the feeling of strength and freedom they represent for me.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY -
Amber Young has always painted what surrounds her. The land she grew up on – a pond, a lake, the Acadian forest of Hampton, New Brunswick. These have all shaped her development as a person and an artist.
Born in 1972 in New Brunswick, Young began painting as a child. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 1995. Studies in ceramics followed at Sheridan College from 1995-1996 and from 1997-99, she studied traditional Chinese ink and brush painting under the teacher Hwang Lu De in Tainan, Taiwan. Young completed a Bachelor of Art Education in 2002 from Mount Saint Vincent University and NSCAD.
