Beaches were some of Molly Lamb Bobak’s favourite spaces for long walks, contemplation, and sketching. Beaches were a recurring theme for the artist. From the 1950’s lithograph “Beach” featuring Brighton Beach in the UK, to the vast expanse of beaches on Canada's east and west coasts, to the black rocks of Caesaria, Israel, beaches were a draw. Sometimes Bobak painted them full of bodies, depicting figures with gestural strokes to emphasize the energy and motion of the scene. There was palpable movement in these paintings.
But then she also often painted the vastness of the landscape – the dramatic skies, the reflections of figures on the wet beaches at low tide. These compelling compositions bring memories of brisk, wind-swept outings, as in this painting of Long Beach at Tofino, British Columbia. The bundled figures in their parkas and hats anchor the viewer in this painting that showcases the majesty of the beautiful vista.
