In 1957, Bruno won a Royal Society Canadian Government Overseas Fellowship, which enabled him to give up teaching in British Columbia and paint full time in Europe. It was also during this year that the couple's daughter Annie was born.

While in Europe, Bobak met with artists and attended exhibitions of Turner and Monet whose techniques in landscape painting influenced his oeuvre. Bobak was also fascinated with the expressive painting of Oscar Kokoshka and Edvard Munch.

This painting features a view towards a stone bridge with moored boats on both sides of the harbour and a Union Jack flag being flown on the historic St. Mary Redcliffe church tower.

Bobak has chosen blocks of pink, chartreuse, yellow, blue and lavender in the sky and in the water to emphasize atmosphere. This expressive painting style is the artist's signature from that era.

The subject of the painting coincides with the artist's location in 1962. Bobak held a notable solo exhibition at the City Museum and Art Gallery in Bristol, England. This show coincided with a number of other prestigious UK solo exhibitions, including at the Leeds City Art Gallery (Feb–Mar 1962), the Kaplan Gallery in London (1962), and the South London Art Gallery (1963).

The painting is framed by a linen liner with a gold inside liner and a gold, ornate wood outside moulding. The outside framed dimensions are 35 x 53 in.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY -

Aged 20 and just out of art studies at Central Technical School in Toronto, Bruno Bobak made an impressive debut as a professional artist. Having enlisted in the army, he submitted a watercolour to an army art exhibition, won first prize, and was appointed as an official war artist in 1943.
