I wanted to see if I could use circles and ellipses to imply the movement and direction of skating “in the round” as well as muted colour and tone to allude to the subtle beauty of winter. I arranged and edited the space around the skates with frosty drapery and round, ice-like objects. I like to take time as I work, sometimes moving or replacing objects, to keep the surface alive until things settle in. This way of working is motivating and allows a little bit of poetry into the process.

I love drawing and measuring. As I paint and make adjustments, I often look for “through-lines” and geometric shapes which keep me grounded in the drawing and composition. Straight lines, squares and edges, such as those in the old window frame and some of the fabric shapes, can be found and used just enough to balance out the softness and roundness of other elements.
