Penguins are amazing creatures who have adapted to living, and raising their chicks in some of the most inhospitable places on the planet. The penguin parents take turns swimming from their breeding grounds, south to the ‘Antarctic Polar Front’ to feed themselves, and bring back food for their young. This journey roundtrip can take 7 to 10 days. The Antarctic Polar Front is a juncture where the cold Antarctic water meets the warmer currents coming from the equator, and in this area of the Antarctic Ocean, fish thrive in great numbers.
As the climate warms the area where the currents meet is moving closer to the South Pole, which means an even longer journey for the penguins to get fish. This could mean that these already arduous journeys, could eventually become undoable from some of the penguin’s breeding islands. - Margot Cormier Splane
