Beaches were a recurring theme for the artist. From the 1950’s lithograph “Beach” featuring Brighton Beach in the UK, to the vast expanse of beaches on Canada's east and west coasts, to the black rocks of Caesaria, Israel, beaches were a draw. Sometimes Bobak painted them full of bodies, depicting figures with gestural strokes to emphasize the energy and motion of the scene. In the fall I race against the first killing frost to put down all they suggest to me. A figure walking their dog bisects the composition, and we feel as if we too are about to begin the steep walk down. Marysville is a rare example of a 19th-century company town, where a rehabilitated cotton mill, former shops, and extensive housing remind us of important economic activities of the past.
