Chris Gerald Williams lived in Picton, Ontario. His childhood was spent near Bath, England where pastoral landscapes and classical Roman buildings inspired his devotion to natural and classical subjects. He studied art at the Central Technical School in Toronto where he was instructed by Doris McCarthy, James Gordonier and Robert Ross. His paintings were of still life, animals, and landscapes. Summer and fall, Williams trekked around Ontario’s lakes and beaver ponds, getting his observations onto canvas. His still lifes evolved into a series of edible subjects. He exhibited widely in Canada, the U.S. and England, where for several years he was a successful portrait artist. His paintings of wild places, animals or homely bread and cheese portray a world of serenity.
