Monica Memory is an illustrator and ceramicist based in Fredericton, New Brunswick. Working primarily in porcelain, Monica produces a line of functional ceramic house wares that invoke the cheerful relationship between colour and pattern. Monica has completed two Diplomas in Fine Craft from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, in Surface Design/Textiles in 2010, and Ceramics in 2019. She is currently enrolled in the Advanced Studio Practice program at NBCCD. Her work is sold in dozens of boutiques across Canada and the United States and has artwork licensed for manufacturing. Monica has been selected to participate in multiple programs to grow her artistic practice, including being chosen by Craft Alliance to receive travel grants to show work at NY Now and to attend art licensing seminars at Surtex in New York, by ArtsLinkNB for the Catapult Accelerator Program, and by The Saint John Loan Fund for the Enterprising Women's Business Program. Monica has near perfect colour vision.
The pursuit of a beautiful surface is what fuels me to create. Making the switch from digital illustration to ceramics allows me to build up these surfaces with my hands. I draw, paint, and carve away at the layers, using carefully chosen colours and textures to create depth. Ceramics are so tangible, these pots need to be picked up, hugged, and spun to look at the full illustration. Every time they are used, something new that went unnoticed can be appreciated, creating an emotional connection to them that makes them a part of their owner's morning coffee ritual.
