Danielle Hogan is a maker, educator, and practice-led researcher. She is a former board member at Open Space Art Society in Victoria BC and alumnus instructor from the Vancouver Island School of Art. Recent presentations of her research have taken place in Melbourne Australia at the International Society for Education through Art’s World Congress this past July, and at Concordia University as part of National Art Education Association (’13). She earned a diploma in fine craft from the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design (’95), her BFA from Emily Carr University (’00), and her MFA from the University of Victoria (’03).
Danielle is a doctoral candidate in Interdisciplinary Studies at the University of New Brunswick. Her research embraces the fields of craft in contemporary art, the feminist possibilities of/and feminist theory regarding craft media & their processes, the relatively recent phenomenon of Craftivism, the history of DIY culture, Making pedagogies, and the continued quest for the world’s greatest latte!

I become a watercolorist when I travel. A methodology rather than an occupation; the practice of watercolour slows down the ‘gulp-like’ aspect of seeing for me as I struggle –unsettled and fascinated in equal parts – to take in the sights, smells, sounds and textures of each unique place.
Travel is a privilege, and the best way I know to repay such opportunity is to see well. Conceding to each new situation by suspending judgement, and yielding to a commonality of human experience represents the choice to welcoming curiosity, compassion, even friendship, in the face of unfamiliar cultures, customs, and beliefs.
Watercolour facilitates for me, the responsibility to savour experiences; in such way, the difference between painting and photographing are akin to the distinction between chewing chocolate cold, or allowing it to melt slowly over the tongue before consuming...
These paintings represent my gleanings of Barcelona from the summer of 2016.
